Controls and Options

  1. The controls and options section of the tool determines WHAT will be linked (and what will not be linked).
It follows the same general layout of the 1st Word tool.

In order for a link to be made, three conditions must all be met:

    1.     The bookmark must exist in the target document, and be reflected in the link set data.

    2.     The document to be linked must have the matching phrase and it must occur in text of

the proper style (as well as not be a sub string, or a different namespace, etc.).

    3.     The type of link (ASN, XML, Acronyms or Terms) must be enabled in the option of this tool.

If a link does not occur where you expect it to, it is a result of one of these three things.

1Verbose Control

Verbose Control The verbose button, when checked, adds additional debugging information to a document to aid in determining why a link is not occurring as expected. This typically produces a document so full of debugging clutter as to be of no value to the end user.

2Terse Control

Terse Control The terse button controls how the text of listed entries in the used-in (linking) section is rendered.

In some document styles (SAE ATIS for example) it is customary to replace the full length name of the ASN or XML entry (which is often the same as the descriptive name that just preceded it in a listing of all the used by locations) with a short term of ASN or XML and then move the full name of the entry to a tool tip for that link. The Terse style code text option allows this behavior to occur.

This produces shorter and more readable standards when in Word or on-line, but can be confusing to others if the hyperlinks are subsequently removed (in which case named entries seem to have ASN, XML following them for no apparent reason, this being the location where previously a hyperlink was placed).

3HyperLinks Control

HyperLinks Control The following Hyperlink buttons allow further detailed control of what will be linked.

Record Entries [Default ON]
If checked, then links between records (typically the name of the record in the Used-In text) will be linked

ASN.1 Entries in ASN [Default ON]
If Link is checked, then proper occurrences of the ASN string name between sections of ASN.1 (in the code style) will be linked. If Anywhere is checked, then any matching ASN phrase (regardless of enclosing style) will be linked. The anywhere case defaults to OFF.

XML Entries in XML [Default ON]
If Link is checked, then proper occurrences of the XML string name between sections of XML (in the code style) will be linked. If Anywhere is checked, then any matching XML phrase (regardless of enclosing style) will be linked. The anywhere case defaults to OFF.

Acronyms [Default ON]
If checked, then any matching string in the normal text area will be linked back to the Acronyms entry and the acronym will be displayed as a tool tip.

Terms [Default ON]
If checked, then any matching string in the normal text area will be linked back to the Terms entry.

4Processing Statistics

Processsing Statistics Processing statistics are displayed in the same way as in the 1st Word document as the work progresses. The terminology is slightly different because the links are loaded from the link map rather then built up as the process proceeds, but otherwise it is the same.

5Command Buttons

Command Buttons The Link to Selected Documents button is the go button for the tool.

The View Final Result button will launch the final word file to view it when done.

The Quit button will exit the program.
