Rule Name: |
Rules dealing with external record reuse (container) |
Position: |
Root |
Name: |
Ext_Rules |
Default: |
Checked |
Usage: |
A container class used to hold the rules which apply to aspects of the record when used in the ExternalDEs type of table. These rules deal with changing the names of such entries (pre-pending “EXT_” which is no longer in general use) and with confirming that the record has a proper source field (needed to manage references back to its code module). |
This rule holds several other rules beneath it as follows:

PrePend an EXT_ on the descriptive name when linked
Rule Name: |
PrePend an EXT_ on the descriptive name when linked
Position: |
Under: Rules dealing with external record reuse
Name: |
Ext_Name | ||
Default: |
UN-Checked | ||
Usage: |
The phrase “Ext_” is added to the beginning of the descriptive name for the record. This is used by some standards to indicate that the record comes from another standard. If changes were made, a note is added to the log and displayed.

Prepend NOT_USED_ on entries with no linking found
Rule Name: |
Prepend NOT_USED_ on entries with no linking found |
Position: |
Under: Rules dealing with external record reuse |
Name: |
Ext_NOTUSED |
Default: |
UN-Checked |
Usage: |
The record is checked for links used (using the current linking table settings) and if NO links to other tables are found, the phrase “NOT_USED_” is added to the beginning of the descriptive name for the record.
This is used by some standards as part of a clean up phase of effort to ensure that the entries on the ExteralDes table are in fact used by the standard (that the other tables have at least one data frame that references this entry). Note that you can also set the 1st Word tool to flag entries that have no linking to others with some warning text as well. |
Warn when source of record is empty (unknown module)
Rule Name: |
Warn when source of record is empty (unknown module) |
Position: |
Under: Rules dealing with external record reuse |
Name: |
Ext_Source |
Default: |
UN-Checked |
Usage: |
The source field of the record is checked to confirm that it has some content (text length > 0) It does attempt to match the source string to the list of known standards and their FADD.
If no content is found then the record can not be correctly mapped to an SDO and FADD family, and therefore can not be properly referenced by other records. Such entries are placed into the “Unknown” FADD. In a well formed database there would be no entries in this namespace. |
