Upgrading the Tools

Upgrading the Tools

Upgrading the Tools

There are frequent updates to the Mini-Edit tools, and you may want to upgrade as these come out to take advantage of new features. Typically the upgrades come in one of two ways; both can be obtained here.

A zip file Method

An Installer Method

When more extensive changes have occurred, an installer script is provided. This script will handle the details of any ActiveX of DLLs which need to be provided, install them and register them. If the user has a more current release, the script will not overwrite it (normal Windows behavior).

It should be noted that as of release 2.1 (Release Number 410 and beyond) when the new integrated spelling editor was added, we have been using installer scripts to ensure all users will have a properly registered copy of the spell checker installed.

Major stable releases always have an installer script provided with them. If you prefer NOT to have the most current beta release, stick with the installer script releases.

The Help Files

In, addition you can always find the most current help files in their on-line web form here.

The CHM file used by the Mini-Edit tools can be downloaded directly from here  - place it in the same directory as Mini Edit.

The installer script bundles the CHM file, so you need not download it separately.

A tip for users of older Mini-Edit tools.  Prior to the revision 2.x.x edition, the tool was installed in a folder called "../Mini-Edit" which will still be present once you install the current revision, which is placed in "../MiniEdit"  (note the prior folder used a "-").  If you wish to remove this older version, simply drag the folder to the trash after removing any data files you may wish to keep (move these to the new folder).  While it is possible to keep and run multiple copies of the current Mini-Edit tool, this is not advised because when each copy of the tool is run it will register itself as the de facto application and this can result in unexpected folder and data choices.
