Registry Output Converter

The Registry Output Converter is a self contained application used to convert textual dumps from the original on-line IEEE data registry into various useful formats, including those used by Mini-Edit. Because the on-line IEEE data registry has been de-commissioned, it is no longer needed or employed by Mini-Edit users. It is included here for completeness, and because it can be launched from the Mini-Edit main screen by pressing the Import... button.

1File to Process

File to Process What file and path to open and process.

2View Source

View Source Opens the selected file using whatever viewer the user has registered (typically a text file).

3Browse...

Browse... Used to select the file that will be processed, it starts a standard windows file open Dialog.

4Option controls

Option controls Various processing options used to control the import of the data and how it is extracted, processed, and made into records.

·     Verbose     [Default OFF]
Enables additional process comment in the status areas at a cost of slower through put; used to find bad lines in the input which may cause problems in processing.
·     Process Commented Tags Too [Default ON]
Some sources of data have additional comment tags that need to be processed to gather all the data present in the record, which this option enables.
·     Trims White Space from Tags [Default ON]
White space found in the tag names is ignored and not used when detecting tag type. The IEEE registry export format style pre-dates XML and it has some odd quirks like this that need to be overcome.
·     Trim White Space from Content [Default ON]
As a rule we trim dangling white space (spaces and tabs) in the records at all times; this option enables that behavior. And as a side effect, record fields do not grow with mindless extra spaces (a latent error the IEEE registry tool had).
·     Smart Trim Content [Default ON]
Remove dangling line feeds and resulting white space (LF, CR_LF etc) in the records at all times; this option enables that behavior.
·     Auto View [Default ON]
When enabled, the file produced is automatically run, as if the View Output
button had been pressed.
·     Skip Empty XML Tags [Default OFF]
When outputting a file (especially an XML rendition of the data) it often occurs that there is no content in a particular tag set. This option, when checked, suppresses writing tags with no content, producing a smaller output file.
·     Presume a format of "<tag> Data"     [Default OFF]
Some sources (often those created by data stewards by hand) do not follow the leading space format found in file produced by the IEEE registry systems. This option, when checked, relaxes the rule checking used to successfully process such data.
·     Presume " <end>" [Default OFF]
Some sources (often those created by data stewards by hand) do not follow the trailing space format found in files produced by the IEEE registry systems. This option, when checked, relaxes the rule checking used to successfully process such data.

The default setting are generally best unless there is a need to change them.

5Generate ASN1

Generate ASN1 When pressed, the current file will be processed to extract all the relevant ASN code entries found in it, and these will be gathered into a textual ASN source file for further use. The final file will be named as per the file name provided to the right. Any prior file by that name will be deleted. Typically a proper ASN header section is then added and the source file is processed by a complier. You can achieve the same results using the Export1 button in the Mini-Edit tool.

6Generate XML

Generate XML When pressed the current file will be processed to extract all the relevant records and fields found in it, and these will be reformatted and gathered into properly formatted XML file for further use. The final file will be named as per the file name provided to the right. Any prior file by that name will be deleted. Typically this is used to export the raw data record to another tool or application. You can achieve the same results using the Export1 button in the Mini-Edit tool.

7Generate Access

Generate Access When pressed, the current file will be processed to extract all the relevant records and fields found in it, and reformat them into a new table in an existing Access File. Note that the Access file needs to exist and not be in a locked state. The new table will have only those fields that the IEEE registry supported, so when it is first opened for viewing by Mini-Edit the table structures and many addition fields will then be added to it to make it current. After this completes, the table sorting utility can be used to extract records, rename the table, etc. as needed.

8View Output

View Output When pressed, the file produced above will be opened, using whatever application the user has registered for that file type (*.TXT, *.XML, *MDB).

9Status Bar

Status Bar During processing, the current status and operation is displayed here. A progress bar appears underneath for some operations.

10Quit button

Quit button Exit the program.
